Early Spring? Break out the Pithecusa Rosso.

With unseasonably warm weather in February, it's no wonder why we're drinking wine from Ischia, a volcanic island in the gulf of Naples. In a forty minute ferry ride to the Island from Sorrento through the breathtaking Tyrrhenian Sea, with Mount Vesuvius in the background, it's hard not to relax.

Ben Oberto & Connor Drexler stopped by last week to tell us more about Tommasone's Pithecusa Rosso. After a quick game of guess the varietal percentages(not telling who won) I could almost taste the coniglio all'ischitana(a local recipe for grass fed rabbit, liver & tomatoes). The breakdown is as follows: Piedirosso(45%), Aglianico(40%) and Montepulciano(15%).

Not heading to Ischia anytime soon?

Not to worry, we're stocked up.

What we're drinking...

Gottino regular Eddie Marco just can't get enough of Malvira's '97 Langhe Bianco, and who could blame him? This Piemontese blend of Chardonnay, Sauvignon & Arneis(each aged in French oak seperately for a year) is our snowy winter white, and we've got plenty to share.

Cosciotto di Agnello e "Alea Viva" at Gottino!

Tonight we're serving Cosciotto di Agnello alle Erbe, a roast leg of lamb from Fleisher's Butcher Shop. We're drinking Occhipinti Alea Viva, 100% Aleatico from the volcanic slopes of Lake Bolsena, an hour north of Rome. We can't think of a better way to say goodbye to January. Join us!

Finally, our glass fruit chandelier gets some company.

When our balsam and boxwood wreath hits the window and fresh mistletoe drapes the doorway, one thing is certain: Christmas is coming. We're stepping it up this year with a traditional cornice fruit fan. Fruit fans are associated with the spirit of Christmas, bedecked with lemons, pomegranates, green apples and even a pineapple, to symbolize hospitality.

Stop by Gottino for some holiday spirit and who knows, maybe a kiss or two.

We love it when our guests leave big piles of nutshells on the bar. We're aren't kidding, it means you're relaxing. Besides, nothing gets us into the holiday spirit like fresh hazelnuts over a bicerin, a Torinese drink of espresso, chocolate & steamed milk.

We're breaking out the samovar, stacking up gottini and celebrating a wonderful year, the way they do in Roncegno(Alto Adige) every October during their Chestnut Festival. Ricotta al fumo Ginepro at Gottino

We didn't think cheese was meant to be breathtaking, but rather a perfect still life of the terroir from which it came. Though if you close your eyes and eat a piece of Ricotta al fumo Ginepro-we'll give you a moment to catch your breath.

This 60 day aged, juniper-smoked Soprevvissano sheep's milk ricotta should have you channeling Abruzzo's rolling hills, but just in case, we're serving it with their local sunflower honey to help seal the deal.

Apple Picking 2010/Mele e Cotechino

It isn't fall at Gottino without our apples...

This year's apple picking field trip led us to Applewood Orchards in Warwick, N.Y. Some might say the third week in October is too late for picking, but we think there's little in life more rewarding than a ripe Rome Beauty, and a bottle of A'ltea Prosecco. We brought the apples back, and we're making mele e cotechino. It's our way of celebrating New York's bountiful harvest, join us for the party.

Luca D’Attoma(oenologist for the stars) and his Duemani project are responsible for the Altrovino, a stunning blend of Cabernet Franc and Merlot, rich with layers of raspberries, ripe tannins & liquorish. We're pouring it by the glass and keeping it simple with arista arrosto. It has us daydreaming behind the bar about Tuscany-care to join?
